Home Again. La Sierra Leone in bici per tornare alle origini

Si intitola Home Again. A Bike Ride to a Bike Race questo emozionante cortometraggio che racconta la storia di un gruppo di amici che intraprendono un viaggio in bikepacking nel stato della Sierra Leone in Africa centro occidentale. Un percorso a ritroso nel tempo per ritrovare le loro radici e il contatto con le persone che hanno sempre fatto parte della loro vita. La meta era anche quella di poter arrivare fino alla linea di partenza del Tour de Lunsar, una gara ciclistica che dopo lo stop pandemico tornava ad essere disputata in quella regione.

Il film è stato realizzato da Slim Wonder, Lehi Cano ed Eric Brewer. La storia del viaggio e tutte le foto sono di Slim Wonder.

” Ogni volta che l’universo cercava di ostacolarci, qualcuno interveniva con un cuore caldo, un sorriso e una mano d’aiuto. Abbiamo visto e incontrato persone che si sentivano come una famiglia. Abbiamo percorso più miglia attraverso il paesaggio ultraterreno di argilla rossa di quanto alcuni di noi vorrebbero ricordare. Il sole scaldava i nostri cuori e bruciava la nostra pelle. Alla fine di ogni corsa, c’era un pasto epico. C’erano aragoste e barracuda e gamberi freschi dalle reti dei pescatori. Ma, soprattutto, c’era la connessione con altre persone, faccia a faccia nella vita reale, che cercavamo da così tanto tempo. Ho passato la maggior parte degli ultimi due anni in bicicletta per andare al lavoro e qui, finalmente, ho sentito che andare in bicicletta mi aveva finalmente riportato a casa.”

” In the summer of 2021 as the covid pandemic waxed and waned a community of cyclists started planning bikepacking adventures. As this disparate group from across the diaspora kicked around cycling themed trips that would bring them closer as a community, they came across the Tour de Lunsar. Starting in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, the multi day stage race would carry its participants to Lunsar and Makeni and other parts of the west African country. With support from Surly bikes, makers of some of the best bikepacking bikes, and Swift industries, makers of some of the best bikepacking bags and randonneuring bags, the crew set off to find out what cycling meant in Sierra Leone.”

“Once they landed in Lungi International Airport, the adventure was just beginning. Covid cases were well controlled and covid antigen tests were taken. Obstacles were overcome and the country was there to be explored. They would learn of the powerful impact of the transatlantic slave trade and its legacy across the African diaspora. They learned of iron ore mines and diamonds and the natural resources the country held. But, by the time the travelers would arrive at the race in Lunsar, they would find that the true diamonds from Sierra Leone were its people.”
